US President Donald Trump unexpectedly cut short his visit to the G7 Summit in Canada on Monday night amid growing conflict between Israel and Iran. The White House cited “events in the Middle East” as the reason for his sudden return to Washington, where he is expected to monitor the crisis from the Situation Room alongside his national security team.

Before his departure, Trump posted a warning on Truth Social, urging people to evacuate Tehran and reiterating that Iran must never be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. He criticized Iran for rejecting a proposed nuclear agreement and described the ongoing violence as a tragic waste of life.
While other world leaders at the G7 are pushing for calm and diplomacy, Trump declined to support a joint G7 statement calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking to reporters, said the US had shown some willingness to engage in dialogue and mentioned that an offer had been made to initiate a ceasefire and broader talks. Macron saw Trump’s early exit as a possible sign that backchannel diplomacy might be underway.
Despite the US President’s strong rhetoric, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told Fox News that the goal remains a peaceful resolution and a new nuclear agreement with Tehran. He confirmed that US forces are in a defensive posture in the region and are not currently involved in any offensive military action.
Trump’s refusal to endorse G7 consensus documents, on Iran, Ukraine, and global trade has cast uncertainty over whether any unified declarations will emerge from the summit.
