In a bold statement posted on his social media platform Truth Social, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that countries aligning with what he described as “anti-American policies” of the BRICS bloc would face an additional 10% tariff on exports to the United States. “There will be no exceptions to this policy,” he asserted, without clarifying which specific policies were deemed anti-American.

The statement comes shortly after the BRICS group of nations, which recently expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, released the Rio de Janeiro Declaration. The declaration criticized U.S. trade practices, particularly Washington’s use of reciprocal tariffs, arguing that such actions disrupt global trade and cooperation.

The bloc’s latest communique reflects growing frustration among developing economies over protectionist policies and unilateral trade decisions made by the U.S.
Trump’s tariff warning signals rising tensions between the U.S. and the growing alliance of emerging economies. The lack of specifics in his message has raised questions in diplomatic and trade circles, as several U.S. allies and major trade partners are now BRICS members or supporters.
