Gabbard, 43, is the first Hindu American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. Born in American Samoa and raised in Hawaii, she has no direct Indian heritage but has long embraced Hindu philosophy. A devout follower of the Bhagavad Gita, Gabbard has credited its teachings—particularly Karma Yoga and Bhakti Yoga—as guiding principles in her life and career.

Her spiritual connection has been evident throughout her political journey. In 2016, she was a keynote speaker at the 50th anniversary of ISKCON in Washington, where she spoke about the importance of selfless service. Her family also follows the Vaishnavism tradition, with her mother, Carol Porter Gabbard, deeply engaged in Hindu practices.

As DNI, Gabbard will oversee 18 intelligence agencies, including the CIA and NSA, and serve as the principal intelligence advisor to the U.S. President. Her leadership will play a crucial role in shaping U.S. national security policies. With her appointment, Gabbard brings a unique blend of military experience, diplomacy, and spiritual grounding to one of the country’s most critical roles.
