Amid the recent India- Pakistan tensions, reports have emerged that Turkey supplied both armed drones and operators to Pakistan, raising serious security concerns. The situation becomes more sensitive considering that Turkish joint-venture company, Celebi Aviation, manages high-security operations at major Indian airports, including those in Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. Celebi handles around 58,000 flights and over 5 lakh tonnes of cargo annually in India, with a workforce of approximately 7,800 employees.
The company performs ground handling, cargo logistics, and ramp services, many of which fall under high-security operations. Their staff have access to airside zones, areas restricted due to their proximity to aircraft, and handle international baggage and cargo. Though registered in India and subjected to background checks by security agencies like BCAS, Celebi’s Turkish origins raise concerns due to Turkey’s recent military cooperation with Pakistan during Operation Sindoor on May 7. That operation was launched by India following strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and POK.
While Turkey had received humanitarian aid from India during the 2023 earthquake under Operation Dost, its current stance, siding with Pakistan on the Kashmir issue and providing operatives for drones has strained diplomatic perceptions. Celebi’s involvement in sensitive airport operations, despite its longstanding presence in India since 2008, is now under renewed scrutiny.
