Uber is making a strategic push to expand its service offerings in India by introducing shuttle services in major cities, including Bengaluru. Having already successfully run pilot shuttle services in Delhi, Kolkata, and Hyderabad, Uber is now looking to bring this mass-transit mobility solution to Bengaluru, the country’s most populous city. The shuttle service works similarly to Uber’s cab-hailing model, where users book a seat on a bus traveling fixed routes that align with their destination. The intention is to cater to high-demand areas and add more routes based on commuter response.

Regulatory hurdles
Despite the potential benefits, Uber has encountered regulatory challenges in Bengaluru. The Karnataka Transport Department has not yet granted approval for the shuttle service, citing concerns over existing policies that only permit BMTC buses to operate within the city. According to state officials, allowing private players like Uber to run shuttle services could potentially impact the operations of BMTC. Uber representatives, however, argue that their shuttle service could help reduce traffic congestion and offer commuters a technologically advanced transportation option.
Key features of Uber shuttle
Uber’s shuttle service is designed to offer a convenient, mass-transit solution with real-time tracking, digital payments, pre-booked seats, and air-conditioned, pocket-friendly rides. The service aims to provide an efficient alternative for urban commuters by running on fixed routes, making it easier to plan travel within the city. Uber believes that with the right regulatory approvals, its shuttle service could transform public transportation in Bengaluru, making it a viable, tech-enabled option for daily commuting.
