The “washroom fiasco” in Udupi has at the moment become a matter of political contestation. The BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) unit in Udupi had earlier taken a march from their office to the SP’s (Superintendent of Police) office in Bannanje in a demonstration against the state government.

In relation to this, a statement by the MLA of Udupi, Yashpal has stirred controversy and gone viral on the internet. Addressing a crowd, he said, “Parameshwar calls this a child’s play. What is a child’s play is his son’s sex change operation. Last year too, the hijabis brought shame to the nation. Yet again, they have stirred Udupi. How did they get the courage to do this? Today they have brought a camera to the washroom, tomorrow they might bring a bomb. We need to get to the crux of who their contacts were? Who lent them support? We cannot rule out the role of PFI (Popular Front of India) in this,” he said. Was the remark a bit below the belt?

Earlier, G. Parameshwara, home minister of Karnataka, had characterised the “washroom fiasco” as a small incident which was blown out of proportion by vested interests. “It is an incident that happened between friends. Criminal activities should be punished, but there is no complaint in this case,” he said.
