On June 1, Ukraine executed a high-risk, covert drone assault deep inside Russian territory, targeting military airfields in a meticulously planned operation codenamed Spider Web. Described as one of the most sophisticated attacks of the ongoing war, the operation was aimed at crippling Russia’s strategic bomber fleet on the eve of renewed peace talks.

The Ukrainian Security Service (SSU), reportedly under the direct supervision of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and SSU chief Vasyl Maliuk, spent 18 months planning the strike. Dozens of drones—likely pre-positioned or smuggled into Russia—were launched from within the country using lorries parked near petrol stations and sites close to airbases. This tactic helped bypass Russian radar and air defenses.

The drones struck four major airfields, successfully damaging or destroying up to 41 Russian bombers. Video footage later confirmed multiple aircraft engulfed in flames. The operation’s precision and coordination suggest extensive on-ground reconnaissance and the involvement of local assets, highlighting a new level of Ukrainian capability.
Simultaneously, Russia launched its own airstrike on a Ukrainian military base, killing at least 12 soldiers. The twin assaults underscore a dramatic escalation in the three-year war, just hours before Istanbul-hosted peace talks were set to begin.
With sabotage and high-tech warfare now defining the conflict, Spider Web signals a dangerous new phase.
