Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara has issued a public apology after facing widespread criticism for his remarks regarding a recent sexual assault case in Bengaluu’s BTM Layout. In his statement on Tuesday, he clarified that his earlier comments were misunderstood and emphasizes his commitment to women’s safety. “I’ve always prioritized women’s protection and ensured proper use of Nirbhaya funds. I regret if my words hurt anyone and I sincerely apologise,” he said.

The apology followed outrage over his earlier statement, in which he has described the incident as something that “tends to happen” in large cities. He added that legal action would be taken and instructed police to increase beat patrolling. However, the remark was widely condemned online, with many calling it insensitive and dismissive of the seriousness of the crime.

The assault took place in the early hours of April 3 and was captured on CCTV. The footage shows two women walking down a narrow alley when a man approaches them, gropes the woman and then runs away. The victims, clearly disturbed are seen leaving the scene. In response to the incident and public outcry, the minister has directed police to intensify night patrols in the city to enhance women’s safety.
