Union Minister for Electronics & IT, Railways, and Information & Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, inaugurated two advanced semiconductor design facilities of Renesas Electronics India in Noida and Bengaluru on Tuesday. Marking a significant milestone, Vaishnaw announced that one of these centres will be India’s first to work on 3 nanometer (nm) chip design—placing India at the forefront of next-generation semiconductor innovation.

“This is truly next-generation technology. We’ve done 7nm and 5nm designs, but 3nm opens a new frontier,” said the Minister.

He underlined India’s comprehensive semiconductor strategy covering design, fabrication, ATMP, and supply chains. Vaishnaw also noted global confidence in India’s semiconductor growth, reflected in major investments from global players like Applied Materials and Lam Research.

To bolster domestic talent, the government has launched a semiconductor learning kit for engineering students, complementing Electronic Design Automation tools already distributed to over 270 institutions. “We’re not just building infrastructure—we’re building industry-ready engineers,” he added.

The Minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for prioritizing semiconductors in the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission, citing the sector's rapid evolution over just three years.

Renesas CEO Hidetoshi Shibata reaffirmed India’s strategic importance and highlighted the company’s role in supporting academia and startups through initiatives like the Chips to Startup Programme and Design Linked Incentive Scheme.

Renesas plans further expansion in India, including facilities in Hyderabad.
