With the February 20 deadline for the termination of birthright citizenship in the US fast approaching, Indian couples are reportedly rushing to deliver their babies before the new rule takes effect. Many are opting for C-sections to ensure their children are born as American citizens before the policy change.

US President Donald Trump had signed an executive order ending birthright citizenship shortly after assuming office. Under this order, children born in the US to non-citizen parents after February 19 will no longer be granted automatic citizenship. This has created a surge of urgency among non-citizen couples, including thousands of Indians working on temporary H-1B and L1 visas, who do not yet have permanent residency or Green Cards.
Indian-origin gynaecologists in the US have reported a significant rise in requests for early deliveries from expectant mothers. According to reports, women in their eighth or ninth months of pregnancy—and even some months away from full term—are requesting C-sections.
The move highlights the desperation of many non-citizen families eager to secure a better future for their children by ensuring US citizenship before the ban takes effect. Clinics across the country are witnessing this surge as couples race against the clock to deliver their babies in time.
