The United States has proposed supplying India with the advanced F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter, marking a significant leap in Indo-US defence cooperation. This offer, announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with President Donald Trump, has generated immense interest in New Delhi, given the F-35’s cutting-edge capabilities.

As a fifth-generation fighter, the F-35 is one of the most technologically advanced aircraft in the world, offering superior stealth, supersonic speed, and advanced electronic warfare systems. Its ability to operate undetected while gathering and sharing real-time battlefield intelligence makes it a formidable asset in modern warfare.
The jet’s exceptional sensors and data fusion capabilities provide pilots with unparalleled situational awareness, allowing them to detect and engage threats from long distances. This would significantly enhance the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) operational edge, especially in high-intensity combat scenarios.
India’s potential acquisition of the F-35 would also strengthen its air superiority in the region, countering evolving threats from adversaries such as China and Pakistan. The three variants—F-35A, F-35B, and F-35C—offer flexibility in deployment, catering to different mission requirements.
If finalized, this deal could be a transformative step for India’s defence modernization, reinforcing its strategic partnership with the US while enhancing its deterrence and combat capabilities in an increasingly complex security landscape.
