The incident took place in Uttar Pradesh

The couple, married for 22 years, have five daughters and often fought because Panna Lal wanted a son. Despite attempts by Anita’s family to intervene, Panna Lal threatened to divorce her and marry another woman to father a son.

On the day of the incident, a heated argument over the gender of their unborn child escalated. In a fit of rage, Panna Lal threatened to cut open Anita’s stomach to determine the baby’s gender. When Anita resisted, he attacked her with a sickle, inflicting a deep wound that left her intestines exposed. Anita, who was eight months pregnant, managed to run to the street, where her brother, alerted by her screams, rescued her. Panna Lal fled the scene upon seeing her brother.

Anita was rushed to the hospital and survived the attack, but tragically, her baby boy could not be saved.

During the trial, Panna Lal claimed Anita had inflicted the wounds herself to frame him due to a property dispute with her brothers. However, the court found his argument unconvincing and sentenced him to life in prison.

This case highlights the severe gender-based violence still prevalent in some parts of India and the dire need for societal change to protect women’s rights and safety.
