Dhankhar, who had been present in the Rajya Sabha until Monday evening, submitted his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, invoking Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution, which permits resignation by addressing a letter to the President. His decision, effective immediately, has surprised many due to its sudden nature.
In the letter, Dhankhar stated that he was stepping down to prioritise his health and adhere to medical advice. Expressing gratitude, he thanked President Murmu for her support and shared a heartfelt note about his time in office. "I am grateful for the invaluable experience I gained as Vice President in this great democracy," he wrote. He also acknowledged the crucial support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he learned a great deal during his tenure.
A lawyer by profession, Jagdeep Dhankhar served as the Governor of West Bengal before being elected as India’s 14th Vice President in 2022. His sudden resignation before completing his term has led to speculation and debate across the political spectrum.
He expressed deep appreciation for the respect, love, and trust shown by Members of Parliament and highlighted his satisfaction in witnessing India’s economic and developmental growth during his time in office.
Following the formal acceptance of his resignation by the President, constitutional procedures for appointing a new Vice President will be set in motion.
