Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri became the target of severe online abuse following his announcement of a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan. After revealing that both countries had agreed to halt all military actions across land, air, and sea, Misri was subjected to harsh trolling. The attacks escalated to personal levels, with abusive terms like "Traitor" and "Deshdrohi" used against him, and even his daughters were targeted, with some questioning their citizenship.

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi condemned the attacks, emphasizing that civil servants like Misri work under the directives of the executive and should not be blamed for government decisions. Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav also criticized the government for failing to protect Misri's dignity, stating that officials only convey decisions taken at higher levels.
Former foreign secretary Nirupama Rao labeled the online abuse "utterly shameful" and stressed that such personal attacks on diplomats and their families cross all bounds of decency. She urged unity in supporting public servants rather than vilifying them.
The ceasefire decision followed intense cross-border hostilities and a claim by US President Donald Trump that the United States had mediated the talks. Further discussions between Indian and Pakistani military officials are scheduled for May 12.
