Vimor, a renowned name across India, has left an indelible mark on contemporary sari trends by faithfully recreating patterns from historical saris.

In the heart of Bengaluru’s Victoria Layout lies the Vimor Museum of Living Textiles, established in 2019 to safeguard the legacy of saris and textiles.

The museum boasts an extensive collection of weaves and designs spanning decades, with some dating back nearly a century.

Operating as a boutique store since 1974, Vimor, meaning “pure” in Indonesian, has been instrumental in preserving traditional sari patterns. Vimor has not only upheld historical designs, but has also influenced modern sari trends nationwide.

The museum’s roots trace back to the acquisition of ‘temple saris’ bought from auctions, sparking the idea to recreate these intricate designs. Today, the museum showcases saris named after their original owners and hosts a rich collection, often reviving forgotten weaving styles.

Looms scattered around the museum provide weavers with hands-on experience, fostering creativity and skill development. Vimor’s efforts have even led to the rediscovery of nearly-forgotten weaving techniques, such as the Cubbonpet sari.

The museum, open most days from 10.30 am to 5 pm, welcomes visitors to explore its rich tapestry of history.
