  • BJP and its allies hold around 295 votes, securing a majority over the opposition's 234
  • The Bill allows non-Muslims in Waqf bodies and removes government properties from Waqf classification
  • Opposition warns NDA allies of consequences, while the debate in Lok Sabha is set for eight hours

The Lok Sabha intensely debates as Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju introduces the Waqf Amendment Bill, a legislation that has sparked political controversy in recent weeks. The Bill seeks to amend the 1995 law governing Waqf properties, with the Centre arguing that the changes will enhance their management.

With the ruling BJP holding 240 MPs and key allies TDP and JDU contributing 16 and 12 MPs respectively, the NDA coalition appears to have a comfortable majority of around 295 votes—well above the required 272. In contrast, the Congress-led opposition has roughly 234 votes, making it unlikely to block the Bill's passage.

The debate has been allocated eight hours, though this may be extended if needed. If approved by the Lok Sabha, the Bill will move to the Rajya Sabha for further consideration. Opposition leaders have warned NDA allies, particularly TDP and JDU, that supporting the legislation could have political consequences, given their substantial minority voter base.

Among the contentious provisions of the Bill is the inclusion of non-Muslim members in Waqf governance bodies. Additionally, government-owned properties currently classified as Waqf will be reassessed, with district collectors determining their ownership. The Bill was first introduced in August last year and later reviewed by a Joint Parliamentary Committee before being presented for debate today.
