Waste management costs set to rise in Bengaluru; ₹12 per kg of waste generated

Bengaluru is bracing for a significant hike in waste management costs as Bangalore Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) rolls out a new user fee structure. Effective immediately, establishments failing to implement solid waste management systems will be charged ₹12 per kilogram of waste generated. This applies to apartments, hotels, community halls, and buildings exceeding 5,000 square feet.

BSWML has issued notices to over 2,000 entities producing more than 100 kilograms of waste daily, instructing them to settle dues dating back to April within seven days. While buildings meeting composting requirements will be charged ₹3 per kilogram, non-compliant establishments will face the higher fee.

Currently, Bengaluru’s civic body, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), manages waste disposal for hotels, apartments, and community halls, often relying on private contractors. This approach has strained BBMP’s resources, prompting the push for self-sustaining waste management solutions.

The decision has sparked outrage among affected businesses. Hotel owners and apartment associations argue the fee is exorbitant, unscientific, and a burden amid rising electricity and water costs. “We are already paying ₹5,000–₹10,000 monthly for waste management. This increase is unsustainable,” reportedly said PC Rao, president of the Bangalore Hotel Association.

Community leaders and business owners are urging authorities to withdraw or revise the policy, emphasizing the need for dialogue and alternative solutions.
