A Bailey bridge is a portable, prefabricated truss bridge that was first developed during World War II by British engineer Sir Donald Bailey. Known for its modular design, the bridge can be quickly assembled without the need for heavy machinery, making it ideal for emergency situations. Its durability and strength allow it to support substantial loads, including vehicles and heavy equipment, making it versatile for both military and civilian use.

Vijayan holds meeting

During a high-level meeting today, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, along with political and opposition leaders, reviewed the progress of the rescue missions. The Chief Minister expressed his gratitude for the Indian Army’s rapid response and highlighted that most of the trapped individuals have been successfully rescued, thanks to the bridge.

The Bailey bridge has made it possible to bring down machinery to the affected areas, which was previously a significant challenge. This infrastructure has significantly eased the rescue efforts, allowing for quicker and more efficient operations. Chief Minister Vijayan noted that the collaboration between the state government and the Indian Army has been instrumental in addressing the crisis.

The meeting underscored the unified focus on rescuing those isolated by the disaster and appreciated the dedication of all personnel involved. The state government remains committed to providing immediate relief and continuing the rescue operations to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents of Wayanad.
