Exit polls have indicated that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is set to win 350 seats across India. In Karnataka, most exit polls have predicted that the Indian National Congress (INC) will remain restricted to below 8 seats. Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka DK Shivakumar has however remained firm in the party’s chances to do much better than what the exit polls suggest. “What they are showing in Karnataka is very astonishing. Even during assembly elections, they showed 80-90 seats to the Congress. I was very confident of 136 seats. I am telling you, our number will be double digit plus more. In 2/3rd of the seats we are very confident that Congress will win Karnataka. They may fail. My workers should not lose confidence. People of this country want a change. Even in Dharwad and Dakshina Kannada, our party cadre is stating that we are going to win,” DK Shivakumar said.

He also raised doubts on the methodology followed by the agencies conducting the exit poll. He stated that the party’s own internal survey has indicated a good performance. He put forward his own experience in contesting elections as a metric to indicate that the surveys are reliable. “I have conducted so many elections. We too do a survey. We have our own surveys done. Our sample sizes are a minimum of 40,000-50,000 per constituency. All these surveys may have a sample size of 5,000 to 6,000. Surveys can’t be done by going to a village, sitting at the headquarters of the village and speaking to people. In a village there will be a lot of colonies. There are women. There will be all sections of society. Every section of society has become different,” DK Shivakumar added.
