The two table toppers India and New Zealand who have so far been unbeaten in the tournament will face off in Dharamshala on 22nd October. New Zealand having an upper hand on India in ICC tournaments has been talked about. But this is a recent phenomenon.
Back in 1987 when India hosted its first ever World Cup, the dynamics were different. The two teams first clashed in the Chidambaram stadium in Chennai. India had lost a very close encounter with Australia in the same ground just a week prior to the game. India had lost three early wickets for 21 runs and were facing down the barrel. But Navjoth Singh Sidhu stitched a 50 run partnership with Azharudhin to get India back into the game. However the duo soon lost their wicket and India was in a spot of bother at 114 for the loss of 5 wickets. Kapil Dev’s quickfire 72 of 58 balls with assistance from Kiran More who scored 42 of 26 balls helped India cross the 250 mark and post a total of 252 for the loss of 7 wickets.
New Zealand started well but after Ken Rutherford was caught by Shrikanth when he was at 75, the middle order could not sustain itself with Andrew Jones leading a lone battle. New Zealand eventually lost by 16 runs.
The next time the two teams faced in Nagpur, India had already qualified for the semi final and New Zealand were eliminated but Chetan Sharma getting the first ever World Cup hattrick and Gavaskar getting his first ever ODI century wee highlights of a one-sided game which India won with more than 100 balls to spare.
