What is egg freezing?

It is a medical procedure in which a woman’s eggs are extracted, frozen, and stored for future use. As part of the procedure, the woman’s ovaries are stimulated with hormones to produce multiple eggs. These are then retrieved through a minor surgical procedure called transvaginal ultrasound-guided follicle aspiration.

After retrieval, the eggs are carefully preserved using a freezing technique called vitrification, which involves rapidly cooling the eggs to very low temperatures to prevent ice crystal formation and cellular damage. Once frozen, the eggs are stored in specialized cryogenic tanks at temperatures around -196°C (-321°F).

Egg freezing allows women to preserve their fertility by storing their eggs while they are still young and of high quality. This can be beneficial for various reasons, such as preserving fertility before undergoing medical treatments that may affect fertility (such as chemotherapy), delaying childbearing for personal or professional reasons, or preserving fertility for individuals who have not yet found a suitable partner but wish to have biological children in the future.
