Meta has announced that WhatsApp, one of its most popular communication platforms, will cease to function on certain older Android and smartphone models starting January 1. The move comes as part of the company's efforts to maintain the app's functionality and security, which require newer operating systems.

According to a report from HD Blog, WhatsApp will no longer be accessible on at least 20 devices running outdated software, including Android KitKat. Other Meta-owned apps like Facebook and Instagram may also lose support on these older phones.
Devices affected include models that are at least a decade old, such as the Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X, and Sony Xperia Z. Users with phones five to six years old, however, can continue using WhatsApp without interruption.
For those still using these older devices, exporting WhatsApp chats is recommended to prevent data loss. Affected devices include:
- Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
- Moto G (1st Gen), Motorola Razr HD, Moto E (2014)
- HTC One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
- LG Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
- Sony Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
Users are advised to upgrade their devices to ensure continued access to WhatsApp and other Meta apps.
