  • 11 fans died in a stampede during RCB’s IPL victory celebrations at Chinnaswamy Stadium
  • State govt report blames RCB, KSCA, and DNA for mismanagement and lack of permissions
  • RCB may leave Bengaluru by 2026 due to strained ties with the Karnataka government

The future of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as a home team in Bengaluru hangs in uncertainty following the fallout from a tragic stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives. The incident, which occurred during the victory celebrations of IPL Season 18, has not only marred the joy of RCB’s long-awaited title win but has also triggered a potential administrative and political crisis surrounding the franchise’s operations in the city.

From celebration to Chaos

RCB finally clinched the IPL title after a hard-won victory, sparking euphoric celebrations across the city. However, the victory parade outside the stadium turned deadly when overcrowding and mismanagement led to a stampede that killed 11 fans. Within hours, the mood of jubilation turned into mourning.

RCB blamed in government investigation

A 331-page investigative report submitted to the Karnataka High Court by the state government has placed primary blame on RCB, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and event organiser DNA for poor crowd control and mismanagement. The report highlighted multiple failures, including:

  • Miscommunication around the parade route
  • Free pass distributions
  • Lack of proper permissions
  • Inadequate security arrangements
These failures allegedly resulted in uncontrollable crowds and ultimately, the tragic stampede.

Tensions between RCB and Karnataka government

The situation has escalated into a larger conflict, with the government reportedly treating RCB as the main culprit. The investigation, combined with ongoing political tensions, has created a state-vs-franchise dynamic. Without state support, police cooperation, or coordination with local corporate stakeholders, RCB’s continued use of Chinnaswamy Stadium as its home ground may not be feasible.

Is a new home ground inevitable?

Sources suggest RCB might be forced to consider a new home base outside Bengaluru by 2026. Other IPL teams like Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings have already played select matches in alternative venues, and RCB might follow suit. However, shifting away from the “Bangalore” brand could cost the team significant fan support and brand identity. Whether RCB will compromise or relocate remains uncertain.
