Bengaluru's winter chill is proving harsh not just on its residents' wardrobes but also on their skin, with city hospitals reporting a sharp rise in eczema cases. Dermatologists attribute this seasonal surge to low humidity, dry air, and irritants like woollen fabrics, which exacerbate symptoms of this chronic skin condition.
Medical professionals note a 50% increase in eczema cases during the colder months, with many patients experiencing severe flare-ups marked by itching, redness, and inflammation. Reportedly, dermatologists in the city are handling around 40 eczema cases each daily, with nearly 90% of outpatient visits during this winter linked to this condition. Reduced humidity depletes the skin’s natural moisture, while exposure to wool aggravates symptoms, making winter particularly challenging.

Individuals with dry or genetically predisposed skin are especially vulnerable. Winter’s low humidity creates the perfect storm for flare-ups, according to dermatologists.
At Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, Dr. T.K. Sumathy reportedly highlighted that 10 out of 30 dermatology cases daily are eczema-related, often appearing in skin folds like behind the knees or around the neck. She emphasized the importance of moisturizing, calling it “a simple yet effective way to manage symptoms by retaining hydration and creating a protective barrier.”
As Bengaluru braces for colder weeks ahead, dermatologists advise residents to prioritize skincare to prevent winter-induced discomfort.
