As the world observes World Mental Health Day today (October 10), it is a poignant moment to reflect on the remarkable contributions of the late Ratan Tata to mental well-being. The visionary businessman, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86, was not only known for his leadership in transforming Tata Sons but also for his pioneering efforts in mental health advocacy.
Under his guidance, Tata Trusts launched several impactful mental health initiatives, including the Udaan programme in 2016. The Udaan initiative, aimed at improving mental health care across India, focused on rehabilitating individuals with mental disabilities. It worked on institutional reforms and community-based mental health services, breaking new ground in a country where mental health awareness was still developing.

Udaan's collaboration with the Government of Maharashtra resulted in two major projects, including a district-wide mental health programme in Nagpur, serving five million people with early detection and treatment at the community level.
Ratan Tata’s leadership in the corporate world extended beyond business as he championed workplace wellness and promoted a culture of well-being. His belief in integrating work and life to make both meaningful left a lasting imprint.
On this World Mental Health Day, Tata’s enduring legacy continues to inspire efforts to improve mental health care and advocate for holistic well-being.
