Travel time between Bengaluru and Chennai on premium trains like Vande Bharat and Shatabdi Express is expected to drop to four hours, reducing by 25 minutes from the current journey duration. This improvement comes as South Western Railway (SWR) works to increase the maximum train speed on the Bengaluru-Jolarpettai section.

A speed trial is being conducted on December 5 to assess raising the speed limit from 110 kmph to 130 kmph. The revised speed will be implemented upon receiving clearance from the commissioner of railway safety. This marks the final step in upgrading the Bengaluru-Chennai rail corridor to 130 kmph, as the Chennai-Jolarpettai section was upgraded last year.
The upgrade will significantly benefit the two Vande Bharat and two Shatabdi Express trains operating daily between Bengaluru and Chennai, offering faster and more efficient travel for thousands of passengers.
SWR has urged the public to avoid trespassing on railway tracks and exercise caution at station platforms during the trial and beyond.
The faster connectivity is expected to enhance convenience for travelers while reinforcing the importance of rail infrastructure improvements in meeting the growing demand on this busy route. The initiative is set to boost rail travel efficiency between two major economic hubs of South India.
