‘Your one vote is equal to Rs 1 lakh annually in your account,’; Rahul Gandhi reaches out to women voters

Across elections, the rural woman voter has proved to be a decisive factor in elections. With the 4th phase of election taking place on May 13th, the Indian National Congress (INC) has attempted to have an outreach among this section of voters through the ‘Mahalakshmi’ scheme. “Under Congress’s ‘Mahalakshmi’ scheme, we will give ₹1 lakh every year to a woman from a poor family. Our guarantees have already changed the lives of crores of families in Karnataka and Telangana. Be it the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA), Right to Information, Right to Education or Food Security... Congress has empowered millions of Indians through our schemes,” INC leader Sonia Gandhi said in a video message ahead of the voting.

In the upcoming phases, a greater portion of seats would be from the Hindi heartland which has traditionally voted in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The rural women votes is considered to be a major reason for the victory of BJP in the recently concluded state election in Madhya Pradesh. "Your 1 vote is equal to ₹1 lakh annually in your account. With ₹8,500 being deposited directly into bank accounts every month, women of India will become free from financial dependence and will be able to write their own family’s destiny. So vote and change your circumstances,” INC leader Rahul Gandhi stated on X.
