YouTube is launching a new artificial intelligence tool designed to identify users under 18, even if they provide false information while creating their account. This feature, which will be tested in the United States from August 13, aims to strengthen the platform’s protections for minors in line with growing global demands for tighter digital safety standards.

The AI system works by analyzing behavioral patterns, such as search queries, video viewing habits, and account activity history, to estimate a user's actual age. If the system suspects a user is underage, it will automatically activate certain safeguards. These include disabling access to age-restricted content, removing personalised advertisements, issuing regular screen time reminders, and limiting sensitive recommendations like those involving body image. Teen users will also see privacy alerts before they upload content or post comments.
Users wrongly flagged as minors can verify their age by submitting a government ID, a selfie, or a credit card verification. YouTube plans to monitor the feature’s accuracy and efficiency during the US pilot phase and gradually expand its availability based on feedback.
This initiative reflects a broader industry trend as companies respond to legal pressure from countries like the UK and members of the European Union, which are enforcing stricter age verification requirements. YouTube’s parent company Google has previously mentioned that artificial intelligence would be central to its safety strategies.
While the change could slightly affect creators, especially those targeting a teen audience, due to the switch to non-personalized ads, YouTube has stated that the impact on earnings will likely be minimal.
