The homecomning was organised in New Delhi

Shettar had quit the party last April

Senior Karnataka political leader Jagadish Shettar has returned to the Bharatiya Janata Party. In a function held at the party headquarters, he renewed his loyalty to the saffron party in the presence of bigwigs like BS Yediyurappa.

Though Shettar had bid good riddance to the BJP last year just before the Karnataka elections as he was denied a ticket for the elections, there were workers who felt that Shettar had betrayed them by joining a party that is allegedly known for its anti-hindu stance.

That apart, in politics, such defections are common. In fact, such turncoats have earned the moniker Aaya Ram Gaya Ram which refers to someone who joins a party and then leaves it abruptly! It could also mean floor-crossing among others.

Let’s give you more details.

Genesis of ‘Aaya Ram Gaya Ram’

“The expression is based on Gaya Lal, an MLA from Haryana. After winning the 1967 elections as an independent candidate, he switched to the Congress. In the next fortnight, he switched parties thrice. He went to United Front from INC and returned to INC and then went back again to United Front again. This back and forth resulted in the term ‘Aaya Ram Gaya Ram’”.

Back to the BJP, such aaya rams and gaya rams are certainly not new. In 2013, BS Yediyurappa and Shobha Karandlaje had quit the BJP to form their own. But later, they returned to the BJP.

In fact, another senior BJP leader from Karnataka, Laxman Savadi, also a dormer deputy Karnataka chief minister also quit the saffron party last year. He shifted to the Congress, and won from the Athani constituency. Now, even as Shettar has made a homecoming, talks are rife that he too might be brought back to the saffron kitty.

Well, regional leaders of the BJP know very well that under a strong and robust leadership headed by PM Narendra Modi and second in command Amit Shah, it is easy for them to taste victories. Any ride against the tide, that is staying in other parties would be tough. So it is always better to go along with the tide.

Politics, after all, is shrewdness and smartness!
