India is embarking on the development of one of the largest clean energy hubs globally, signaling a significant shift away from fossil fuels in energy production. Spearheaded by Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), the project is taking shape near a remote airstrip in western India.

The Khavda Renewable Energy Park in Gujarat state is poised to surpass a staggering capacity of 30,000 MW (30 GW) in solar energy. AGEL has already kickstarted the initiative with 1,000 MW of solar energy capacity operationalized in its initial phase. Completion of the park’s construction is slated within the next five years, with the entire capacity expected to come online by 2029.

India’s commitment to renewable energy is evident, with projections indicating that the nation will contribute over half of the world’s new renewable energy capacity by 2026. This drive is fueled by ambitious targets, mandating 40 percent of electricity generation from renewable sources by 2030.

Spanning an area five times larger than Paris, or 538 square kilometers, the solar park is anticipated to generate approximately 81 billion units of clean electricity, catering to around 16.1 million households.

Furthermore, it is estimated to create 15,200 green jobs and mitigate an impressive 58 million tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to the carbon sequestration of 2,761 million trees.

This monumental endeavour not only signifies India’s commitment to sustainable energy but also serves as a significant step in combating climate change on a global scale.
