Incident occurred during a procession for dissolving the Ganesha idol

Petrol was sprayed across a circle

8 children who had gathered around suffered minor burns

A shocking incident occurred in Amaravathi during a procession for Ganesha-idol immersion after a week-long celebration. The organisers wanted to recreate a scene from the blockbuster Kannada movie, Kantara. Petrol was sprayed across a circle wherein an artist had planned to give a dance performance similar to the one observed in the film. However a fire caught onto it shortly. Those gathered around began screaming.

8 children who had gathered around suffered minor burns as a result of this and 2 people have been severely injured. This incident was captured on a mobile camera.

The dance that was featured in Kantara was the Bhuta Kola dance. It is performed by Guliga, a locally revered figure in the region of Dakshina Kannada. Guliga is also referred to as Kshetrapala, or a protector of the region and the symbol of Guliga can be found in many houses to fend off thieves. In the climatic sequence of the film, the spirit of Guliga is invoked in the protagonist who then proceeds to annihilate an exploitative landlord. This sequence was greatly appreciated by the audience across the country.
