The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is gearing up to resolve the issue of potholes with renewed vigor, focusing on both the main thoroughfares and the smaller ward roads.

Recently, on October 17, various divisions within the BBMP initiated a call for tenders to address the pressing matter of pothole repair, with an estimated expenditure of Rs 9.15 crore.

Efforts to remedy the pothole situation have already commenced, prioritizing the repair of potholes on major roads and arterial routes.

Furthermore, the Palike is extending its decentralization strategy by entrusting the management of ward roads to specific zones.

Consequently, distinct divisions within various zones have initiated the tendering process for the repair of potholes in different sections of Bengaluru.

The cumulative tenders for pothole mending within the ward roads amount to a significant Rs 9.15 crore, with the repair work slated to commence from November.

Within the city, BBMP is responsible for overseeing an extensive network of 1,344 km of major roads, while the South zone alone houses an extensive network of 10,700 ward roads.

Though hailed as a step in the right direction, some activists emphasize the importance of conducting the pothole-filling process at the grassroots level, underscoring the need for active involvement of ward committees in the process of decentralization.
