Currently KIADB approves building plans for industries
Industry stakeholders argue this impacts industrial development
BBMP has submitted a proposal to UDD on this
Facing financial constraints, the civic body in Bengaluru, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), is seeking authority from the Urban Development Department (UDD) to approve building plans for industries, a responsibility currently held by the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB).
Industry stakeholders argue that this shift may adversely impact industrial development in Bengaluru.
The BBMP has submitted a proposal to the UDD, emphasizing the substantial potential in managing industrial building plan approvals. The proposal contends that the BBMP is losing its rightful revenue share to the KIADB.
Reportedly, an official from the Town Planning Department revealed, “The UDD is currently scrutinizing the proposal, and we are optimistic that the government will be persuaded. Discussions on this matter are ongoing between the Urban Development Ministry and the Ministry for Large and Medium Industries.”
Opponents of the proposal from within the industry express concerns about its potential repercussions on industrial development in Bengaluru. KIADB is known for its swift approval process, typically granting plan approvals within weeks under the ease of doing business policy.
In contrast, securing approval from the BBMP is a cumbersome process that often takes a minimum of six months, coupled with its own set of challenges, according to an industry expert.
