Bengaluru’s urban governance is set for a major transformation as Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has approved the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024 recently. With this, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will soon be dissolved, paving the way for the establishment of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and the creation of multiple new city corporations.

The state government has 120 days to implement the changes. The GBA will serve as a central authority overseeing development across an expanded metropolitan region, likely incorporating around 25 peripheral panchayats. The move aims to decentralise administration and address longstanding urban management challenges.

Under the new structure, Bengaluru will be divided into three to five city corporations, each retaining the 'Bengaluru' prefix. The legislation also mandates that assembly constituencies remain intact within corporation boundaries to prevent jurisdictional overlaps. A committee comprising senior officials and legislators will manage the boundary delimitation process.

BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath reportedly confirmed that the government will constitute the Greater Bengaluru Authority within the stipulated 120 days and meanwhile a decision on the number of corporations and their boundaries will be taken.

Residents can expect more responsive governance, improved urban infrastructure, and increased citizen participation. However, challenges such as boundary disputes, equitable resource distribution, and coordination between the GBA and new corporations could complicate the transition.

The government is racing against time to meet deadlines and ensure a smooth reorganisation of Bengaluru’s civic framework.
