BBMP aims to implement over 1,000 rainwater pits across 117 parks

These pits will be instrumental in replenishing groundwater

In the previous fiscal year, 966 rainwater pits were constructed in 83 parks

The BBMP is set on boosting the number of rainwater harvesting pits in parks to bolster groundwater replenishment. BBMP aims to implement over 1,000 such pits across 117 parks.

To achieve this goal, BBMP is exploring partnerships with private agencies and tapping into CSR funds, foreseeing a positive impact on groundwater recharge. In the previous fiscal year, 966 pits were constructed in 83 parks, significantly aiding local groundwater recharge. Now, the plan is to scale up this initiative.

Each pit is designed to be 12 feet deep and five feet wide, with a capacity to hold 400 litres of rainwater. The construction cost per pit is estimated at approximately Rs 40,000, with a total projected cost of Rs 4 crore for all pits. BBMP officials underscored the considerable benefits of these pits, noting the longstanding issue of water bodies drying up in Bengaluru.

These pits will be instrumental in replenishing groundwater and elevating the water table, crucial for the health of trees in parks. They’ll also serve as storage for rainwater during dry spells. Furthermore, nearby borewells within 50 to 60 meters of the pits witness significant recharge.

With Bengaluru’s annual rainfall averaging around 845 mm, a considerable portion of rainwater currently goes to waste in drains. Hence, BBMP’s focus now lies on capturing and conserving rainwater through these proposed harvesting pits.
