BMTC sees a surge of 10 lakh additional passengers

Residents are adjusting their commuting habits to beat heat

As temperatures soar in Silicon City, residents are adjusting their commuting habits to beat the heat, leading to a surge in passengers for both the BMTC (Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation) buses and Namma Metro.

The scorching summer sun has prompted citizens of Silicon City to ditch their bikes, cars and autos in favour of the cooler confines of the air-conditioned BMTC buses and Namma Metro. Reports indicate a staggering increase in the number of commuters opting for these services, with a record-breaking 7.9 lakh individuals choosing to travel via the metro on a single day. This surge is largely attributed to the adverse effects of heatstroke, compelling people to seek respite from the sweltering weather.

Similarly, the BMTC has witnessed a surge of 10 lakh additional passengers per day, primarily driven by the demand for its air-conditioned buses.

The influx of passengers can also be attributed to the onset of school holidays, which has prompted an influx of visitors to Bengaluru from other districts. Consequently, both the metro and BMTC services are operating at maximum capacity to accommodate the heightened demand.

Previously, the metro served approximately 5 to 6 lakh passengers daily, while the BMTC catered to around 30 lakh commuters. However, with the onset of summer, these figures have skyrocketed, with nearly 40 lakh individuals now relying on public transit to navigate the city’s streets.
