14 dogs were rescued from an illegal breeding operation in Kannuru, located in northern Bengaluru, bringing an end to a year-long case of unlawful dog breeding.

Recently, a group of approximately 11 individuals, accompanied by two police officers, entered a secured compound within the Kanakasree Housing Society.

Within the compound, they discovered several dogs in a distressing condition, described as “pathetic” by one of the rescuers.

Videos and images captured during the rescue depicted languid, emaciated dogs confined in cages, consuming the food and water placed before them. Hima Prasad, an animal rescuer, reported that the group gained access to the area after the Bagalur police station officers forcibly opened the lock on the compound gate.

The individuals responsible for the breeding centre, identified as Karthik and Rajan, were initially absent from the premises but later arrived, attempting to justify their actions.

Harish K B, an anti-animal cruelty officer at People for Animals, joined the group and characterized the animals as “extremely malnourished, with severe skin infections and other health conditions.”

Following the rescue, the dogs were initially brought to the shelter of veterinarian Dr. Akshay Prakash before being relocated to a shelter in Kengeri.

Reportedly, an official from the BBMP Animal Husbandry Department stated, “We are currently finalizing the regulations for issuing licenses for breeding, pet ownership, and trade. Once approved, we will conduct raids on illegal breeding centres. Until then, regrettably, there is limited action we can take against such backyard breeding.”
