Substantial drop in student enrollment in BBMP schools

A stark decline of nearly 60% compared to previous year

Only 9,467 students have registered in BBMP schools

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has been making significant efforts to enhance the quality of education in its schools and colleges. However, these plans have encountered multiple setbacks, resulting in a substantial drop in student enrollment for the 2024-25 academic year.

Confusion within the department has been a major factor impacting student admissions. Despite the BBMP’s initiatives, the number of children enrolling in its institutions has plummeted. Enrollment figures show a stark decline of nearly 60% compared to the previous year. During the 2023-24 academic year, over 23,000 students were enrolled, but this year, only 9,467 students have registered.

The detailed enrollment numbers for the current academic year are as follows:

Shishu Vihar: 935

Primary School: 1360

High School: 1230

Pre-Graduate: 4279

Graduation: 1565

Post Graduate Degree: 98

Several issues are contributing to this decline. The transition of BBMP schools and colleges to the education department has been problematic, and confusion over the appointment of outsourced teachers has further complicated matters. Additionally, the failure to provide proper uniforms, including shoes and socks, has deterred many parents from enrolling their children in BBMP schools.

There is a growing concern among parents and officials that if these issues are not promptly addressed, the reputation and viability of BBMP schools and colleges will continue to suffer. It is imperative for the corporation to resolve these challenges to regain the trust of the community and improve enrollment rates in the future.
