TenderSURE roads span a total of 13.41 km in Bengaluru

BBMP estimates annual maintenance cost at Rs 50 lakh/km

Funding companies will be granted dedicated space for branding purposes

In a groundbreaking move, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is seeking corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds to ensure the maintenance of 12 state-of-the-art TenderSURE roads, spanning a total of 13.41 km in the heart of Bengaluru.

Although the BBMP will handle the asphalt requirements for these roads, it is proposing a collaboration with private companies to ensure their immaculate upkeep. In exchange, these companies will be granted dedicated space for branding purposes.

The BBMP has estimated the annual maintenance cost for these roads at Rs 50 lakh/km and has identified Church Street, Cunningham Road, Residency Road, Richmond Road, and St Mark’s Road as key locations for this public-private partnership (PPP).

Responsibilities for the private firms encompass tasks such as repairing footpath interlocks, painting cycle lanes, tending to ornamental plants, fixing broken drain slabs, replacing malfunctioning street lights, and enhancing the overall aesthetics of the roads. As for the core tasks of asphalt application and main carriageway painting, the BBMP will retain those responsibilities.

In a unique arrangement, the BBMP will allocate a 3 feet x 2 feet space at four different locations along a one-kilometer stretch to participating firms for branding purposes.

While this approach of engaging private entities for the ongoing maintenance of roads is novel in Bengaluru, both the BBMP and Namma Metro have previously enlisted the assistance of corporate entities, including builders, for the maintenance of road medians in various parts of the city.
