In response to the criticism regarding the condition of the saplings planted as part of its compensatory afforestation program, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has taken steps to address the issue.

In a recent disclosure through a response to an RTI application, the BMRCL has communicated its instructions to the contractors responsible for the upkeep of saplings around Sarrakki, Veerasagara and Gottigere lakes.

The BMRCL has directed contractors to ensure that saplings receive adequate watering during the summer months, utilizing water tankers for this purpose. Additionally, the corporation has deployed three staff members to closely monitor the health and progress of these planted trees.

BMRCL also has committed to maintaining cleanliness in the vicinity of the planted saplings to ensure their growth and well-being.

The concerns about the state of the saplings were raised by Raghavendra B PachhaPur, an individual affiliated with the NGO ActionAid India.

Earlier this year, the NGO had conducted an assessment of the saplings planted by the BMRCL at Sarakki, Veersagara, and Gottigere lakes, revealing inadequate maintenance practices.

According to their findings, out of the 901 saplings planted, 690 were found to have healthy green leaves, 27 had brown leaves, 87 had no leaves, and 29 were dead.

The survey also highlighted issues such as some saplings being bound with wire for displaying tree numbers, potential cattle intrusion points at two lakes, and litter in and around the planting areas.
