Amidst a severe water shortage plaguing Bengaluru, BWSSB (Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board) has taken strict measures against wasteful consumption, fining 22 families for using drinking water for non-essential purposes.

Each household was imposed a penalty of Rs 5,000 for violating the BWSSB directive aimed at conserving water during the crisis.

The BWSSB reported collecting Rs 1.1 lakh in fines, with the southern region contributing the highest amount of Rs 80,000. Earlier this month, in response to the escalating water scarcity, the BWSSB had advised residents to utilize drinking water judiciously, discouraging activities such as car washing and gardening.

Repeat offenders face an additional fine of Rs 500 for each violation. During the Holi festivities, the BWSSB had urged residents to abstain from using Cauvery and borewell water for recreational purposes like pool parties and rain dances.

Additionally, the board had initiated a program encouraging establishments such as hotels, apartments, and industries to install aerators to curtail water consumption.

The water crisis has pushed Bengaluru to its limits, prompting residents to adapt by working from home, resorting to disposable dishes, and utilizing public facilities for essential needs.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah revealed that Bengaluru faces a daily shortfall of 500 million litres against a requirement of 2,600 million litres. Cauvery River supplies 1,470 million litres, while borewells contribute 650 million litres to the city’s water needs.
