The much anticipated caste census report has been handed over to Chief Minister Siddarmaiah by the Chairperson of the Karnataka Backward Class Commission K Jayaprakash Hegde. This took place at the Vidhana Soudha. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah declined from making any comments during the event.

Minister For Backward Class Development And Kannada And Culture Department Shivaraj S Tangagadi has however offered some comments on this occasion. “This is not merely a caste census. This is also an appraisal of the socio-economic and educational standards of Karnataka. This is not pitted against any person or community. We have accepted the report. We are not aware of its content. No one is aware of it. It has been submitted. Question of discontentment does not arise. Who has read the report? Nobody,” he said.

The Kantharaj Commission report was filed during Siddaramaiah’s first term as the Chief Minister between 2013 and 2018. There was opposition from leaders of the Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities. There were accusations that many households were not covered during the census. Siddaramaiah has however been keen and promised its release on many occasions.
