His FASTag purchased through Paytm malfunctioned

Court ordered Paytm to refund Rs 1,645 paid in toll penalties

A Bengaluru resident faced toll plaza penalties despite maintaining sufficient balance, thanks to a malfunctioning FASTag purchased through Paytm.

Seeking justice, he approached a city consumer court, which recently ruled in his favour. The court ordered Paytm and its operator to refund the Rs 1,645 paid in toll penalties, with interest. Additionally, they were directed to compensate the man with Rs 10,000.

On December 23, 2019, Harishesh of Basavanagudi bought three FASTags from Paytm for his family cars. While the tags functioned correctly until February 2022, one developed issues on February 13, resulting in nil balance displays during drives. Despite having sufficient funds, Harishesh faced double toll penalties on highways. Complaints to the Paytm helpline yielded no assistance, prompting him to send a legal notice on March 24, 2022.

In November 2022, he approached the Bengaluru Urban consumer disputes redressal commission, seeking a refund and compensation for service deficiencies. Paytm countered the complaint, asserting its role as a service provider and denying account blocking. The court, however, deemed the allegations baseless and frivolous, ruling in favour of the aggrieved resident.
