In a groundbreaking surgery, doctors at Aster RV Hospital in Bengaluru have set a record by performing South India’s first laparoscopic removal of a 4.005 kg fibroid uterus. Dr Sunil Eshwar, lead consultant laparoscopic surgeon, and his team successfully operated on 42-year-old woman, who was unaware of her condition until a routine scan revealed the massive fibroid.

Despite having no symptoms or prior medical issues, woman’s scan, conducted by radiologist Dr Vijayalakshmi V, showed fibroids of 32 to 34 weeks gravid uterus size. Faced with the choice between a total laparoscopic hysterectomy and an abdominal hysterectomy, she opted for the less invasive laparoscopic route, trusting the expertise of Aster RV Hospital’s medical team.

The surgery, lasting five hours, required only a 3 cm incision, far less than the typical 8 cm for traditional procedures. This meticulous operation involved removing around 150 fibroids, the largest measuring 12 cm.

Post-surgery, the woman experienced minimal blood loss and infection risk, leading to a quick recovery and discharge just 48 hours later. Her case highlights the capabilities of modern laparoscopic surgery in treating large fibroids, offering patients faster recovery times and reduced postoperative pain.
