Starting this week, Bengaluru residents will experience a hike in water tariffs for the first time in nine years, as the BWSSB implements a revised rate structure. The increase comes in response to the city’s growing water demand and depleting sources, with officials stating that higher charges are needed to maintain operations and upgrade the infrastructure.
Under the new rates, households using under 8,000 liters per month will pay Rs 7 per kiloliter, up from Rs 6. Those consuming over 25,000 liters will now pay Rs 40 per kiloliter, a sharp rise from the previous Rs 25. This could strain household budgets, especially during summer.
However, experts suggest that simple tools like aerators can greatly reduce water usage without affecting functionality. These devices, fitted on taps, mix air with water while reducing flow by up to 50%. A standard tap may release 10 liters per minute, but with an aerator, this can be cut to five or less.
Many companies are offering customised solutions, with aerators and flow restrictors for different household and commercial needs. Affordable and easy to install, these devices present an effective way to reduce consumption and manage rising water costs sustainably.
