Ban is in light of the ongoing Vidhan Parishad by-election
3 associations approached the High Court against DC order
Additional Advocate General Pratima Honnapura represented the state
Starting from 5 PM on February 14th and until 6 AM on February 17th, the sale of alcohol has been prohibited in Bengaluru. The Deputy Commissioner passed an order to this effect. This was in light of the ongoing Vidhan Parishad by-election for the teachers constituency.
The Karnataka Hotel Association, Wine Merchants Association and the Bengaluru Hotel association approached the High Court against this decision. The High Court had however intervened in this matter. The elections are for just one post. The court ordered that the ban on sale of alcohol must last just for the day of the election. Bench led by Advocate S.R Krishna gave the judgement. Additional Advocate General Pratima Honnapura representing the state however questioned this order and appealed against it. A bench listened to the arguments and held that the order passed by the Deputy Commissioner is valid. Hence, the order passed by the bench led by advocate S.R Krishna was stayed.
