Incidentally, a third horse, which has also been diagnosed with the same, has been quarantined at the Hebbal Institute of Veterinary Sciences. The family of the owners has also been asked to confine themselves to their house.

An area of around 5km radius from DJ Halli has also been declared ‘infected’.

What is the glanders disease?

Glanders, or farcy, is a highly contagious and often deadly disease that primarily affects horses, donkeys, and mules. It is caused by a bacterium known as Burkholderia mallei, which leads to the formation of nodules and ulcers in the upper respiratory tract and lungs of infected animals. Additionally, glanders can result in the development of pus-filled lesions on the skin.

Although humans can contract glanders, it predominantly affects horses, with donkeys and mules also being susceptible. The disease can naturally spread to other mammals, including goats, dogs, and cats. Additionally, camels, wild felines, bears, wolves, and certain domesticated dogs have shown susceptibility to glanders.
