    India Flora Online launched by Professor Sankara Rao at CES, IISc

Sankara Rao, a visiting professor and distinguished fellow at the Centre for Ecological Sciences (CES), Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), unveiled a groundbreaking initiative called “India Flora Online” at IISc.

“India Flora Online” is a digital database of the flora of India. This digital database represents the most extensive effort in India to catalog its rich plant diversity. Reportedly according to Professor Rao, the database addresses the critical need for a centralized and searchable resource for the country’s botanical wealth.

During his presentation, Prof. Rao guided the audience through the features of the database, emphasizing its significance in fostering a deeper connection with nature. “Access to information on plants creates a sense of connection with nature which is necessary,” he reportedly remarked, highlighting the educational and ecological importance of such a resource.

Professor Rao underscored that despite our perception of familiarity with the flora of India, there are significant gaps in our understanding. The India Flora Online project aims to bridge these gaps by providing a comprehensive and accessible platform for researchers, educators, and nature enthusiasts alike.

By launching India Flora Online, Professor Sankara Rao and his team at CES, IISc., have taken a significant step towards preserving and promoting India’s botanical heritage while also advancing scientific research and environmental conservation efforts.
