Students from IISc are working on finding remedy for endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition wherein uterine lining grows outside uterus

This condition causes severe pelvic pain and potential fertility complications

A group of undergraduate students from Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is actively engaged in addressing the challenge of endometriosis as part of their participation in the international Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition.

This competition, focused on synthetic biology, brings together students from various corners of the world, spanning both undergraduate and graduate levels, who vie for prestigious awards.

Hailing from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), the team’s primary objective this year is to develop a therapeutic remedy for endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a condition wherein tissue resembling the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, causing severe pelvic pain and potential fertility complications.

According to the World Health Organization, approximately 10% of women of reproductive age worldwide are affected by this condition.

The IISc iGEM team’s project revolves around the utilization of short segments of genetic material known as messenger RNAs (mRNAs) encoding an antibody targeting interleukin-8, with the aim of inhibiting its activity within the affected tissue.

Beyond their rigorous research efforts, the students have also dedicated substantial time to raising awareness about endometriosis.

They have engaged with various stakeholders, including industry experts, researchers, and medical professionals who may eventually administer the developed therapeutic solution to patients.

In addition to their daily laboratory work, the team has undertaken numerous outreach initiatives to promote understanding and support for this important cause.
