A significant milestone has been achieved in the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project, marked by the successful casting of a 31-metre long U-girder, the first of its kind in India.

The momentous event took place on the night of January 6 at the Casting Yard in Devanahalli. This particular U-girder, a single span structure, is a crucial component in the development of the ‘Mallige’ line, also known as Corridor-2, encompassing an approximately 8 km viaduct or elevated section from Hebbal to Yeshvantpura.

What sets this achievement apart is the unprecedented length of the U-girder, surpassing the conventional 28-metre-long ones used in other metro projects.

The casting process for these U-girders occurs at dedicated yards, away from urban areas, necessitating meticulous planning and precision.

Following their creation, these girders are transported to the construction site and launched over piers using high-capacity cranes or launchers, as detailed by the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP) in a statement.

What are U-girders?

U-girders, integral to the project, are U-shaped pre-tensioned precast components that enable immediate track laying. Widely employed in metro projects globally, U-girders ensure not only superior quality but also contribute to time-saving in construction processes.

This achievement reflects the project’s commitment to innovation and efficiency, setting the stage for further advancements in the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project.
